Workshop with Kathryn Cameron: Making art with recycled paper pulp

Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m.

Artist and former LNAF resident Kathryn Cameron will host a workshop open to the public. Based in New York, her work focuses on the use of color and materials across time and cultures. She explores the symbolic, psychological and spiritual impact of color on our world. She seeks to discover the links between nature and human beings through the spiritual meaning of forms and by using natural materials, often recycled or reused, including paper, clay, fibers, wood and leather.

The proposed workshop is an introduction to the countless ways of working with paper pulp, focusing on the use of recycled paper. It will cover basic papermaking techniques and share how to work with pulp at home or in your workshop, without expensive tools or equipment.

Making paper by hand can be a very simple process. It’s also a wonderful way to use up waste paper or egg cartons, and instead create an object of handcrafted beauty while respecting the environment.

She will start with a short talk to introduce the basic techniques of papermaking, the materials needed to work with this medium and give examples of works by contemporary artists using this process.

She’ll introduce the basic papermaking set-up, demonstrate the technique for preparing paper pulp and discuss ways in which the material can be used to make art. After the demonstration, participants can use the prepared paper pulp to hand-build a sculpture on a small frame.

WORKSHOP with Louise Laffaille

Sunday, June 23 at 10 a.m.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Former resident at La Napoule Art Foundation, Franco-Swiss painter Louise Laffaille offers a pictorial and sensory workshop based on gesture and water. Let yourself be seduced by an unforgettable experience in a magical setting! This free painting workshop is designed for beginners as well as for more experienced painters wishing to enrich their practice.

Louise Laffaille: “I’ve spent the last few years exploring the element of water in my painting, through the traces it leaves as it dries, the life it transmits in its forms, and the breath of its freedom, which requires me to let go completely in the gesture of painting.
In this research, I attach particular importance to accidents, to the unplanned that arrives on my sheet of paper, which always leads me on the next path, and to the discovery of unknown lands.
In this workshop, we’ll explore techniques learned from a Chinese master and the plastic richness that water can bring to painting. Through the exploration of pure, raw forms, but also the construction they can bring to a landscape.
In the idyllic setting of the Château de la Napoule on the Mediterranean coast, we’ll use the landscape we observe as inspiration and means of creation.”

Matt Sheridan THE LINGERING LOVERS

Exhibition from July 5 to 26

Matt Sheridan is a former resident of La Napoule Art Foundation and a contemporary visual artist based in Los Angeles. His animated videos, installations and abstract paintings in motion are held in private collections worldwide and exhibited in galleries in New York, Miami and Los Angeles (USA), London (UK), Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (South Korea), Singapore, Brisbane and Sydney (Australia).
Matt Sheridan is a visual artist, researcher and teacher. Early in his career he became interested in the moving image as a means of self-expression, as a renaissance of painting. He studied visual media at New York University/Tisch School of Arts and is a graduate of the Passadena School of Design in California.
His videos, projections and animated images are “paintings in motion”. They combine painting and video through abstraction, movement, localization and re-materialization. He marries physical reality with virtual images.
“In Sheridan’s videos, multiple points of view present themselves at once: the digital, the pictorial and the animated”.
Sarah Wang in Liberated, Rendered Alien, liner notes for Trips, 2015.
La Napoule Art Foundation is delighted to welcome Matt Sheridan’s exhibition The Lingering Lovers to the Château for the first time. A former resident of the Foundation, Matt spent several periods at the Château working on this extraordinary exhibition project! A time of experimentation, research, discussion and exchange.
